San Ignacio

San Ignacio  is nestled in the foothills of the Maya Mountains in the Cayo District of Belize. Over the years, it has become a popular destination for tourists looking to explore the country’s green jungles and ancient ruins. One fascinating fact about San Ignacio is that it was originally founded as  a small Mayan village, and was later settled by a mix of European explorers and colonizers. Today, San Ignacio is a melting pot of different peoples – with a diverse population of Mayan, Mestizo, Garifuna and Creole communities.

One of the best things to do in San Ignacio is to check out the ancient ruins of Cahal Pech, Xunantunich and Caracol. Visitors can also take a leisurely stroll through the town’s bustling markets, and enjoy a refreshing swim in the waterfalls and natural pools of Rio On Pools. But perhaps the number one reason to visit San Ignacio is to get the chance to venture inside the epic Actun Tunichil Muknal cave. Walking and swimming through the cave, and seeing incredible ancient artifacts and remains like the “Crystal Maiden”, on a tour with us here at Barefoot Services is an experience you will never forget.
